Whimsical, symphonic indie pop storytellers The Decemberists formed in Portland, Oregon in 2000. Led by singer Colin Meloy, who had just relocated from his native Montana, they self released their debut EP 5 Songs, followed by their inaugural album Castaways & Cutouts with Hush Records. Their following albums Her Majesty the Decemberists and Picaresque were released with renowned Pacific Northwest label Kill Rock Stars. The latter album saw their breakthrough into critical success, with its folk influenced tales and careening melodies. After three commercially successful, well received albums, including progressive indie folk rock opus The Hazards of Love, the band took a three year hiatus. Now, The Decemberists have returned triumphantly with their seventh studio album What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World.
