Mark Knopfler made his name as the lead guitarist, vocalist and song writer for Dire Straits, and is considered by many to be a bastion of British rock. After enjoying 15 years of considerable success with the band (including 120 million album sales worldwide), Knopfler went on to pursue a solo career full-time, releasing his debut solo album Golden Heart in 1996. He went on to record seven studio albums and eight critically acclaimed film scores, which he also produced. Famed for his fingerstyle guitar work, he has been ranked 27th on Rolling Stone magazine's list of 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time, and is the recipient of four Grammy Awards, the Edison Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Music Industry, the Steiger Award, the Ivor Novello Lifetime Achievement Award, and three honorary doctorate degrees in music from universities in the United Kingdom. In 1999 he was awarded an OBE, and in 2001 a species of dinosaur, Masiakasaurus Knopfleri, was named in his honor.
