NOTABLE PAST PERFORMANCES

The William Randolph Hearst Greek Theatre stands as a testament to its enduring legacy in the world of entertainment and production with its never-ending list of popular performances.

LIVE CONCERT SHOWS

Notable events at the venue include classical concerts featuring world-renowned orchestras and soloists, such as the groundbreaking San Francisco Symphony. The stage has also played host to legendary rock and pop acts, with artists like The Beatles, Bob Dylan, and Bruce Springsteen dropping by during their tours. In recent years, locals have witnessed an illustrious lineup of artists gracing The Greek’s stage, including award-winning singers such as Brandi Carlile, Yo-Yo Ma, John Legend and many more!

THE BIG GAME BONFIRE RALLY

The Big Game Bonfire Rally, the largest rally of the year at UC Berkeley, is a highly anticipated event held at the Greek Theatre. This annual gathering takes place before the Big Game, a traditional football competition between UC Berkeley and Stanford University. The Greek Theatre serves as the perfect venue due to its spacious amphitheater setup, which accommodates a large crowd of enthusiastic students, alumni, and fans.

During the event, attendees are treated to spirited performances, speeches, and entertainment to boost the morale and excitement surrounding the Big Game. The highlight of the rally is the reading of “The Spirit of California,” a brief reflection on Cal spirit written by Ken Raust, a 1981 graduate of UC Berkeley. This tradition, which began in 1985, adds a meaningful and nostalgic touch to the rally, connecting past and present generations of Cal Bears.

PRESTIGIOUS EVENTS AND SPEECHES

The William Randolph Hearst Greek Theatre has had the honor of hosting numerous honored individuals who left a significant mark on the campus and beyond. Civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. spoke here in 1967 with a powerful message about racial equality and justice. President Franklin D. Roosevelt delivered a speech in 1938 during a visit to the Bay Area where he addressed topics like economic recovery and the importance of community support during challenging times, providing inspiration during the Great Depression.

Other esteemed figures who have given keynote speeches at the venue are Ronald Reagan, Robert F. Kennedy and Winston Churchill. Additionally, The Greek Theatre has also welcomed best-selling authors and intellectuals such as Maya Angelou, who was internationally known for her poetry and wisdom.
